The Ngorongoro Crater on the edge of the Serengeti was created by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. The crater floor is 1700 meters above sea level and has a diameter of about 20 kilometers. An almost unbelievable abundance of animals can be found on an area of 26,400 hectares, perfectly protected by crater walls up to 600 meters high. Bernhard Grzimek and his son Michael are buried on the edge of what is certainly the most famous animal reserve in the world. In 2010 this natural amphitheater was declared a World Heritage Site.

The Hadzabe are traditionally hunter-gatherers and one of the last ethnic groups to have used stone tools in the recent past. They traditionally look for food as far as the Serengeti. Food sources are hunting and the gathering of berries and honey.
