The Ngorongoro Crater on the edge of the Serengeti was created by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. The crater floor is 1700 meters above sea level and has a diameter of about 20 kilometers. An almost unbelievable abundance of animals can be found on an area of 26,400 hectares, perfectly protected by crater walls up to 600 meters high. Bernhard Grzimek and his son Michael are buried on the edge of what is certainly the most famous animal reserve in the world. In 2010 this natural amphitheater was declared a World Heritage Site.

The Hadzabe are traditionally hunter-gatherers and one of the last ethnic groups to have used stone tools in the recent past. They traditionally look for food as far as the Serengeti. Food sources are hunting and the gathering of berries and honey. Although hunting is prohibited in the Serengeti, the Tanzanian authorities make an exception in this case and do not enforce the regulations. We continue to the Datoga, who are skilled blacksmiths and - among other things - make the arrowheads for the Hadzabe.

Staying at Kichakani —Swahili for ‘in the bush’ — means staying in remarkable luxury tents which can be packed up and moved along in a style evocative of the pioneering explorers of the 19th century, yet with all the modern comforts. Handcrafted luggage, easy chairs with an air of mid-century modern, and characterful cabinets and desks, have all been designed to be perfectly portable. This considered modern collection of first-class furniture brings the charm of centuries-ago safari living back up to date.

In addition, the area is crossed by a river, which attracts a diverse fauna all year round (buffalo, giraffes, antelopes, cats ...), but is also a habitat for crocodiles and hippos.
